Also important to channel development is the proportion of suspended load sediment to bed load. Any slope over this threshold created a braided stream, while any slope under the threshold created a meandering stream or – for very low slopes – a straight channel. A threshold slope was experimentally determined to be 0.016 (ft/ft) for a 0.15 cu ft/s (0.0042 m 3/s) stream with poorly sorted coarse sand. On timescales long enough for the river to evolve, a sustained increase in sediment load will increase the bed slope of the river, so that a variation of slope is equivalent to a variation in sediment load, provided the amount of water carried by the river is unchanged. Įxperiments with flumes suggest that a river becomes braided when a threshold level of sediment load or slope is reached. However, there is wide agreement that a river becomes braided when it carries an abundant supply of sediments. The physical processes that determine whether a river will be braided or meandering are not fully understood. ![]() state of Washington transports a large sediment load from the Emmons Glacier of Mount Rainier, a young, rapidly eroding volcano. These channels may themselves be braided. However, anastomosing rivers consist of semi-permanent channels which are separated by floodplain rather than channel bars. Anastomosing rivers are similar to braided rivers in that they consist of multiple interweaving channels. It is also distinct from an anastomosing river. Ī braided river differs from a meandering river, which has a single sinuous channel. When the islets separating channels are stabilized by vegetation, so that they are more permanent features, they are sometimes called aits or eyots. ![]() The channels and braid bars are usually highly mobile, with the river layout often changing significantly during flood events. The braid bars, also known as channel bars, branch islands, or accreting islands, are usually unstable and may be completely covered at times of high water. This gives the river a fancied resemblance to the interwoven strands of a braid. Description Ī braided river consists of a network of multiple shallow channels that diverge and rejoin around ephemeral braid bars. They are also associated with rivers with rapid and frequent variation in the amount of water they carry, i.e., with "flashy" rivers, and with rivers with weak banks.īraided channels are found in a variety of environments all over the world, including gravelly mountain streams, sand bed rivers, on alluvial fans, on river deltas, and across depositional plains. The Rakaia River in the South Island of New Zealand is braided over most of its courseĪ braided river, or braided channel, consists of a network of river channels separated by small, often temporary, islands called braid bars or, in British English usage, aits or eyots.īraided streams tend to occur in rivers with high sediment loads or coarse grain sizes, and in rivers with steeper slopes than typical rivers with straight or meandering channel patterns.

“Chemo brain” is a well-known phenomenon that describes thinking problems before, during, and after cancer treatment, according to the National Cancer Institute. (Don’t stop taking prescribed meditation without first consulting your physician.) Chemotherapy People experience side effects in different ways, but if you’ve noticed that brain fog has occurred after starting a new drug, ask your doctor or pharmacist if cognitive issues are a possible side effect. In addition, taking multiple medications - also called polypharmacy - can be another factor in brain fog, she says. “I warn patients that it can cause cloudy thinking, confusion, and word-finding difficulty,” Wilhour says. For example, topiramate (Topamax), which is used to treat migraine, can leave you feeling mentally murky. Taking medication may include side effects related to brain fog. According to Beyond Celiac, 95 percent of people in its research with nonceliac gluten sensitivity report having brain fog. In addition, food allergies and sensitivities may also change your cognitive capabilities, Wilhour notes. Specifically, a deficiency in B12 or iron can cause anemia, which can decrease your energy levels and tangentially affect cognition, says Wilhour. If you’re eating a restricted diet, not consuming adequate vitamins and minerals may result in experiencing some brain fog, says Pudumjee. (Some call this “pregnancy brain.”)Īs for menopause, one study explains that difficulty with memory can begin early on in menopause and end in postmenopause, likely due to the effects that estrogen has on memory performance. Research shows that people who are pregnant report confusion, disorientation, and fogginess, which lead to behaviors such as putting things down in odd places, misplacing belongings, and forgetting simple work tasks. Menopause and pregnancy can both contribute to brain fog, says Dr. That said, here are a few common causes to consider. One of the challenges with understanding brain fog is that there are so many potential causes, and having brain fog alone doesn’t tell doctors what exactly is going on. In one study that examined the use of the term “brain fog” in Reddit posts, people described this experience with a range of descriptors, including “dissociation, fatigue, forgetfulness, and excessive cognitive effort.” These symptoms can all combine to give you the feeling that your thinking is cloudy. ![]() Pudumjee also says that patients describe a general feeling of cognitive sluggishness.

So I would like to say: Thank you, Stacks, for making it real and for making it right. But in a couple weeks when we are craving it again, we will journey down to Stacks – Matthews and indulge once again in Charlotte’s best corned beef hash outside of my kitchen. So this morning, he stood over the stove and a cast iron skillet and made my very favorite corned beef hash while I cooked the eggs to top it. ![]() Last night, Mike cooked a corned beef, potatoes, and cabbage. Topped with the eggs, it melted in my mouth and made me a very happy person, as happy as I have ever been in a Charlotte restaurant eating corned beef hash. The hash was also well cooked, done enough to be lightly crispy but not so done as to dry it out. ![]() Finely chopped, it had excellent texture, and the flavor was not too sweet, a complaint I have had about other real corned beef hashes in the area. It contained only corned beef, potatoes, and onions. The Corned Beef Hash – This hash was simple, letting the star ingredient shine through. Corned beef hash, two over medium eggs, and oatmeal…yum! The Order – Mike and I both got corned beef hash topped with two over medium eggs. The Wait – We did have to wait, but it was well worth it. That said, bakery items are not the focus of this post. The Matthews location contains a bakery (I do not know about the Waxhaw one), and the case up front is bound to get your mouth watering while you wait to be seated. Both restaurants are open 6am-3pm every day of the week and feature a wide range of breakfast and lunch items. Mike and I obviously ate at the Matthews one, but corned beef hash is on the menu in both locations. There are two locations – one in Waxhaw and one in Matthews. At long last! It is probably important to note that there is a Reuben on the lunch menu at Stacks, which bodes for better corned beef hash than a restaurant that does not have one. While not technically in Charlotte, I contest it’s close enough to count, and I am happy to report that we have found the best corned beef hash in the Charlotte area. Last weekend, Mike and I visited Stacks in Matthews. For some reason that is lost on me, no one in the area has been able to pull it off to my satisfaction. As you have probably guessed, we conduct active searches for where we can get my favorite breakfast meat item, and time after time, we are disappointed. It’s a shame too because, just as with most foods, the real thing is so much better. In most restaurants which it is offered, corned beef hash is the mushy slop that comes from a can. Disregarding good, real corned beef hash is hard to find. On second thought, a rephrasing is in order. Because of this, we are always on the lookout for a restaurant that makes a great corned beef hash.īut honestly, good corned beef hash is hard to find. After all, making corned beef hash is a process that begins the day before when we cook a corned beef for corned beef and cabbage. But he can’t make it every morning we crave it. Mike is a fine crafter of corned beef hash, one of the best, in fact. Mike and I love corned beef – corned beef and cabbage, Reubens, any corned beef sandwich, and of course the piece de resistance, corned beef hash. You Might Also Like: 5 Ways To Best Use The New Subaru Forester and Crosstrek Paddles And One You Should Avoidĭenis Flierl has invested over 30 years in the automotive industry in a consulting role working with every major car brand. The Subaru Lineartronic CVT automatic gearbox is one of the best features on the 2021 Subaru Forester, Crosstrek, Outback, and Ascent SUVs when appropriately used. The two features give the informed driver a high level of engagement and control over the transmission’s behavior, as you’ll find in more expensive sports cars. The driver can “downshift” with the left paddle and bump the shifter on the center console left to lock it into manual mode. The CVT, manual mode, and paddles work in concert and are an excellent option to have in a performance context. But Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT manual mode combined with the steering wheel paddles are a unique feature for drivers who take the time to understand how it works. They let the transmission sort everything out on its own by default and then complain because it doesn’t “shift” like a conventional automatic transmission. But many automotive journalists are either too lazy or fail to learn how to use the paddles correctly. The result is a sharper and sportier driving experience. In 7-or 8-Speed Manual Mode, paddle shifters are mounted near the top of the steering wheel for easy “fingertip control,” giving the driver the ability to select the gear ratio that suits the driving situation. The 2021 Crosstrek Sport and Limited get the automaker’s newest Lineartronic CVT with Adaptive Control, Incline Start Assist, and 8-speed manual mode with paddle shifters. All 2021 Subaru Outback trims come with Lineartronic CVT with Adaptive Control and an 8-speed manual mode with paddles. The 2021 Subaru Forester Sport, Limited, and Touring models use a Lineartronic CVT with Adaptive Control and a 7-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters. But they let one of the best attributes of the Forester, Crosstrek, and Outback go unused. They leave the transmission in automatic mode, eliminating the need to shift and let the Lineartronic CVT adjust to match acceleration. ![]() Most automotive journalists don’t take the time to understand, and most importantly, use the system correctly to maximize the Lineartronic CVT’s abilities. But Subaru adds two misunderstood features.īut Subaru adds a manual mode function with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters that allow the driver to select seven or eight preset ratios depending on the model. ![]() The CVT uses a step-less gear ratio that allows the engine to run in its optimal power range, no matter what speed you maintain, for improved fuel economy and performance. Subaru pairs the Boxer engine with the CVT automatic for its fuel-saving capabilities. The CVT automatic transmission is criticized most because they are high revving, noisy, and slow to accelerate once the car is moving. It’s probably the most misunderstood part of the drivetrain and despised by most automotive “experts.” But when used correctly, it’s a feature that ramps up driver engagement. Still, the Subaru Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic gearbox is one of the best features on the 2021 Forester, Crosstrek, Outback, and Ascent SUVs. ![]() We know we’ll get a negative response from this report. ![]() No other photography or videography is permitted.
